Understanding the Role of Exosomes in Your Health

Exosome therapy is being explored as a treatment for a variety of issues, from chronic pain to skin brightening. However, many people aren’t aware of this treatment, don’t understand it, or feel skeptical about its efficacy. The solution to all of these is up-to-date information, including a thorough understanding of exosomes, how they work, and what they can do for your body.

At her integrative medicine and esthetics practice in Columbia, Missouri, holistic health care practitioner Bonnie S. Friehling, MD provides regenerative medicine options including exosome therapy to help you restore your body and even roll back the effects of aging.

Exosomes 101

Exosomes are also known as EVs, or extracellular vesicles. Initially, it was believed that they were responsible for helping the body’s waste disposal system, but further research has revealed that they play a much larger, more complex role in intercellular communication.

Exosomes carry information within messenger RNA (mRNA), the genetic material that manufactures proteins, which makes them the primary form of communication between cells. This means they can complete a number of different functions, including encouraging healing, stimulating growth, and even ordering cells to complete tasks. Exosomes are an invaluable tool in developing new treatments for various diseases, disorders, and infections.

Exosomes are often linked to stem cells. That’s because exosomes are derived from the media that stem cells are grown in: once the stem cells are removed, the remaining substance is centrifuged, and the exosomes are isolated. Then the exosomes can be injected into your body at the site requiring regeneration.

What exosome therapy can do for you

Exosomes, much like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells, are being explored as a treatment for a number of hard-to-treat issues, including:

  • Chronic pain
  • Ligament damage
  • Skin aging
  • Joint pain
  • Inflammation
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Declining cognitive health

Recent research has indicated that exosomes can be used in the treatment of many degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and osteoarthritis. These treatments are still being explored, but they have exciting implications. These diseases are often caused or worsened by aging.

Exosome therapy can be used to treat physical conditions affected by aging as well, including poor skin health and slow wound healing. For example, inflammation caused by arthritis was once considered a side effect of growing older. So were many mental health conditions. But doctors and researchers are continually developing new ways to combat aging and prevent the body from breaking down in the first place, including by using exosome therapy.
